The Evicted

Candido Portinari1934

Projeto Portinari

Projeto Portinari
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Composition in earthy, ochre, gray, green, lilac, blue, red, rose, white and black tones. Smooth texture. Composition representing six groups of migrants next to a train line and arid landscape in the background. In the foreground, to the right of center, an old man, two women, two boys and a girl near a trunk of leaves and a bundle. The old man sits in a kind of box, has a beard and has his hand on his chin. The women are standing, one facing forward, the other in profile to the left, the two are squalid and have protruding bellies. Both boys wear only shirts, and the girl wears a dress; the belly volume suggests pregnancy. Still close to the group, on the right, two coffins of children are suggested. In the background, across the entire width of the support, we see a slightly curved railroad. On the third level, on the left and on the right, two electric poles with wires that run parallel to the railway. Further down, on the left and center, two hills, and on one of them we see a horse. To the right, a little further, another hill and part of the flat terrain, suggesting a backland landscape.
