During the 1930s, Shirley Temple captured the hearts of millions of moviegoers, providing a welcome respite from the harsh realities of the Great Depression. Ideal obtained the rights to produce a Shirley Temple doll in 1934, and its success catapulted Ideal to the most profitable company in America in 1935. Baby and toddler versions of the doll were added.
