GOLIATH CRANE IN ACTION CONCRETE BLOCKS WEIGHING 200 TONS ARE LIFTED WITH EASE AS THE GOLIATH CRANE WAS SEEN IN ACTION FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY, MARCH 19, AT THE NUCLEAR POWER STATION NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT BRADWELL-ON-SEA, ESSEX. THE CONTROL BOX IS SEEN AT TOP OF PICTURE, TO LEFT OF CABLES. THE CRANE, 185 FEET HIGH AND 226 FEET WIDE, IS OF THE OVERHEAD GIRDER TYPE, SUPPORTED AT EACH END BY A LEG MOUNTED ON EIGHT FOUR-WHEEL BOGIES. ITS FUNCTION AT BRADWELL WILL BE TO LIFT INTO POSITION MAJOR COMPONENTS SUCH AS THE TWELVE 200-TON BOILER SHELLS AND THE HEAVY STEEL RING-SEGMENTS FOR THE REACTOR PRESSURE VESSELS. THE CRANE WILL COMPLETELY STRADDLE EACH REACTOR BUILDING DURING ALL STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION. THE BOGIES RUN ON STANDARD GAUGE RAILWAY LINES (LENGTH 1200 FEET) TO ENABLE THE CRANE TO LIFT RING-SEGMENTS OF THE PRESSURE VESSELS FROM THE SITE WELDING AREA AND DEPOSIT THEM IN POSITION IN THE REACTORS. GOLIATH, DESIGNED TO LIFT A MAXIMUM LOAD OF 200 TONS DEAD WEIGHT SUSPENDED VERTICALLY FROM A MAIN HOOK, WILL ALSO BE USED EXTENSIVELY FOR THE INSTALLATION OF OTHER HEAVY ITEMS OF EQUIPMENT.
