Steamer trunks were popular from the 1860s to the 1950s. Early models were made of wood covered with canvas with wood slats on the outside. This "Flat Top" trunk, which belonged to Kazue Kay Teranashi, is made of plywood, covered with a hard synthetic materal similar to leather on the outside. The inside is covered in a floral wallpaper type of material, with a removable top shelf. The departure shipping label reads, "Manzanar War Relocation Center 10/4/1945."
