The artist Peru Dyer was asked to create a 1400 square feet mural that symbolically celebrates cultural diversity, a theme, which greatly represents the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighborhood known for bringing together its many ethnic communities. The tree symbolizes the peoples of the world and its bark, their different shades of skin. The tree’s roots, shaped like hands, come together to form a cup containing human knowledge. A variety of herbs and spices grow around its base to reflect the cultural diversity of the neighborhood’s residents: Italian basil, Jamaican pepper, horsemint, curry and sage. The sun spreads its unifying energy across the world and teaches its peoples to work together. As Bob Marley said, “We’re all the same under the sun”.
