For Charles-François Daubigny, it is the aestheticism of the wrapping of a peasant woman in high stalks that gives a pretext to paint the cereals. In this landscape streaked with clouds pinked by the evening light, a peasant woman hurries to join the other harvesters who are working a few meters away. High millstones near the farm and some groves of trees animate the horizon. The work on the wheat field visible in the foreground is remarkable in this very large canvas. The intensity of the color, from dark green to golden yellow; the density of the long, supple and slightly melted brushstrokes of the stalks bending in the wind; the delicacy of the blue and red flecks uniting the peasant women, cornflowers and poppies... everything is done to make the whole very realistic The composition of the scene is not less admirable. Advancing the arms loaded with gold, the little peasant girl seems to open the field under his steps to better invite us to sink with her.
