The eponymous painting by Rembrandt van Rijn in the Mauritshuis in The Hague inspired the choreographer Glen Tetley to this ballet. Rembrandt's work moved Tetley's compassion for the man who arrived on the cutting table after his death. He opposed the lives, desires, perhaps the ideals that had this man had against the coldness of science - which was only interested in his muscle.
