This engraving is inscribed ‘Published according to the Act of Parliament 1754 for Stowe's Survey'. It was thought at one time that when Thomas Chippendale senior died at Hoxton in November 1779, he was a patient at this hospital, which was founded by Robert Aske in 1688. However, this was not a true hospital for the sick but a charitable almshouse for twenty paupers and school for 220 pupils. It is more likely that Chippendale was staying in private lodgings, cared for by a private nurse and doctor. After his father's death Thomas Chippendale junior settled the bill of four guineas for lodgings and five guineas for a physician. The body was removed to St Martin's Lane for burial in St Martin-in-the-Fields on 13 November 1779.
