Great white shark

Museum of Natural History of Venice

Museum of Natural History of Venice
Venice, Italy

Its tapered body, propelled by its powerful tail fin, crescent-shaped and reinforced by wide side keels, is particularly adapted to support fast swimming, even for days.
Outstanding movement skills are particularly important for a large predator, but in sharks they relate also to the need of moving constantly to ensure that gills, well visible in the specimen on display, receive enough water flow for respiration.
The white shark loves temperate and cold waters and was once common also in the Northern Adriatic, where today only occasional presences are recorded. The individual on display is a male of 3.75 meters in length, found in the Gulf of Trieste in 1902.
