Saint Catherine of Alexandria (c. 287 – c. 305 AD) is believed to have been a woman of great erudition, trained in philosophy and theology, an opponent of anti-Christian persecutions in the Roman Empire and a fervent preacher of the Gospel, who converted many pagans to the Christian faith. Ultimately, she felled victim to the persecutions she spent her life fighting against. She was condemned to suffer death on the breaking wheel with sharp spikes; on touching the saint’s body, the wheel broke to pieces and she was eventually beheaded. ©Dana Roxana Hrib, European Art Gallery Guidebook, Second edition, Sibiu 2011.
