A Danaus plexippus or Monarch Butterfly specimen from the Department of Entomology collection at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History. One of the most familiar butterflies, it is recognized by its orange, black and white pattern, which serve as a warning to predators regarding their toxicity, and for its epic migration covering several thousand miles from southern Canada and the United States to Mexico and back.
