£9,000 GOLD SERVICE OFF TO NORTH AMERICA. BRITISH MASTERPIECE OF MODERN CRAFTSMANSHIP. DG/own Flying to North America under armed escort on Thursday (August 17th) is one of the most valuable consignments of gold ever to leave this country. While the amount involved (400 ounces) is not unprecedented, the form it is taking - that of an 18 carat gold seven piece TEA AND COFFEE SERVICE considered to be a masterpiece of modern craftsmanship. The service which is insured for £9,000 will have an armed police escort from the BIRMINGHAM City POLICE on its journey from the workshops of the makers (Adie Brothers Birmingham) to London Airport. Heaviest piece of the service is the tray - weighing 220 ounces - probably the largest piece of 18ct gold assayed at the Birmingham Assay office since its opening. PHOTO SHOWS: Close up of the esquisite chasing on the tea pot of the £9000 GOLD SERVICE which is going on tour of 25 cities in Canada and the U.S.A. Arthur Hudson spent 350 hours chasing the work has been a "chaser" for 48 years. FOX PHOTOS August 15th 1950
