Two nyonyas

The women wear simple organdie kebayas fastened with jewelled kerosangs which are more appropriate to the baju panjang. The older lady wears a high-collared baju dalam underneath her kebaya, and a sarong designed with the latest patterns from Pekalongan in the 1920s. Her hair has been cut and crimped in the latest Western style. The design of peacocks amid wisterias in the sarong worn by the younger lady was popular with several batik makers, such as Eliza van Zuylen, J. Jans, and Mrs Oey Kok Sing. She has her hair plaited and rolled into two buns referred to as sanggol telefon (telephone bun). Their sarongs are wrapped at the front in different directions, which was simply a personal preference.
