A desolate border fortress in the moonlit mountain

This painting began with a poetic idea, and Chao went on to develop the images of desolation, mountain, moon and the border fortress. The tall mountain peaks are distinctive forms in the painting, drawing the viewer's vision upwards from the fortress, lingering over the pinnacles and finally focused on the moon.
