Piccadilly Circus in central London is one of the city's most famous urban landmarks. During his first stay in England (1896-1910), Oppenheimer is known to have painted an Impressionistic view of Piccadilly Circus (reproduced in 'Impressionism in Britain', exhibition catalogue, Barbican Art Gallery, London 1995 (156)), but this colourful drawing, capturing its lively bustle, is more expressionistic in style. It is indistinctly dated but was probably made in the mid-1950s.
