One of the best light attack aircraft fielded by the U.S. Navy is the A-7 “Corsair II,” which first entered service in 1966. In March 1969, the aircraft began flying combat missions during the Vietnam War and soon became the primary ground support aircraft. Loved by troops on the ground as it could carry 15,000 pounds of weapons, the A-7 saved the lives of countless U.S. soldiers. The aircraft went on to fly combat missions through the Persian Gulf War of 1991 before retirement by the U.S. Navy in 1993. The last operational A-7 retired from the Greek Air Force in October 2014, nearly 50 years after its first flight.
