Chau artists create a wide variety of masks depending on stories to be enacted in the traditional mask-dance of Chau, and also as single pieces for sale. This image is of a Chau mask of lion.
About the craft: Chau is a mask dance performed in the villages of Purulia district. Like the dance, Chau mask-making is also a distinct art form on its own. The Chau masks resemble the faces of gods, goddesses, animals and various mythological characters. The Chau mask makers primarily reside in the Charida village of Purulia.
