Artist Suchitra Mattai handcrafts the legacy of her own family’s immigration journey in her work A Collective Horizon. This story includes the history of indentured labor and ancestors crossing oceans in pursuit of their own dreams. Mattai’s story, like many stories of American immigrants, highlights shared connections through common threads, woven across generations and into the future.
Upon closer inspection, soft glimmering patterns emerge in the fabric—saris passed down through generations in the artist’s family and community. These traditional Indian garments carry the stories of their wearers, lives lived in pursuit of joy, love, and happiness. A Collective Horizon weaves together a lineage of people following their dreams.
