Abraham Bloemaert’s A cottage with peasants milking goats (c. 1620) is a captivating, unlined canvas that masterfully bridges the gap between sixteenth-century fantasy landscapes and the burgeoning naturalism of the Dutch Golden Age.

This idyllic rural scene is dominated by a weathered farmhouse and features two women in exotic clothing milking goats in the foreground, set against a sweeping, hilly background. The artist painstakingly incorporated charming, realistic details observed from the Dutch countryside, such as a goat nibbling a twig, nesting jars for starlings hanging from the chimney, and a swan resting beside a wicker basket. However, despite these true-to-life elements, Bloemaert’s compositions were entirely imaginary and historically always included a biblical or mythological narrative. Fascinatingly, a surviving preparatory drawing reveals that this painting originally included a depiction of the biblical Prodigal Son praying among pigs on the far right side. Physical evidence on the canvas, such as the imprint of the original stretcher, indicates that a strip of approximately 17 centimeters was cut off at the right, forcefully transforming the religious artwork into a secular landscape. Originally, the young boy depicted leaning on a tree trunk at the right edge of the current frame would have been gazing directly at the destitute swineherd. Remarkably, this seventeenth-century masterpiece has never been lined, preserving its original structural integrity in a highly unusual manner. Completely unknown to the art historical community until its emergence at a 1995 auction, the artwork was later dated to around 1620 by leading scholar Marcel Roethlisberger.

Today, this exceptional painting stands as a vital transitional work in Abraham Bloemaert’s extensive oeuvre, offering viewers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of seventeenth-century Dutch landscape art.
