The incident at Rosewood occurred when black townspeople defended themselves against attack after a Rosewood resident was lynched over an accusation by a white woman that she was attacked and possibly raped by a black man. When several hundred whites burned the community of Rosewood to the ground, the black residents fled and never returned.

This report provided the documentation necessary for the state of Florida to compensate the Rosewood survivors and their descendants for damages. These are the only reparations ever paid to black Americans for the atrocities committed against them. Florida has since declared Rosewood a Florida Heritage Landmark.
