A fishing party

A fishing boat on a bay carries three figures: a slender standing beauty, a youth with fishing pole and head cloth, and a second woman, crouched behind the fisherman with one hand resting on his shoulder. Across the water, the snow-covered peak of Mt. Fuji rises above coastal scenery dotted with autumn leaves. Above this charming scene a verse reads:
Tsuri meisho
momiji gasane no
Fuji mo ari
Oh, this famous place for fishing!
Mr. Fuji with its skirt adorned
with colored maples

Kiyonaga’s mastery of the narrow hashira-e format is apparent in figures and scenic elements arranged like puzzle pieces: the pyramidal form of the seated pair echoes Mt. Fuji’s conical peak, and the lifted obi and erect figure of the beauty repeat the upturned prow and tall mast of the sailboat floating on the bay. Only one other specimen of this print is known, in the Royal Ontario Museum collection.
