A fleet of herring busses, overtaking the nets. Three herring tubes are clearly visible, from the right on the front plan to the left on the back plan. The great and foresail mast have lowered on all ships and only the (square) rear sail is set. A fourth and fifth buss are visible on the middle plan.
The heaving line is overtaken through the hawse hole on the bow of a herring buss and the pellets or buffs are 'chipped' (detached). The fishermen bring in the net via the 'geestrol' (an opening in the bulwark with a roll). The rig of the buss on the right of the painting is completely lowered except for the mizzen. Dimensions (wxh): 65 x 52,5 cm.
