Chester Beatty

Chester Beatty
Dublin, Ireland

This folio is from an album compiled for the Mughal emperors Jahangir (r. 1605-27) and Shah Jahan (r. 1627-58) between about 1612 and 1640. A young prince, whose identity is uncertain, sits in a garden surrounded by various mullas (religious leaders) and courtiers, enjoying refreshments and music. In the background is a small canopied pavilion, set at the intersection of walkways that divide the garden.
