The Prussian King Frederick William I (1688-1740), the so-called "soldier king", appreciated the tobacco colleges for entertainment at court, and he appreciated his army. Both passions meet in this wooden figure: The figure represents a grenadier of the royal bodyguard. The hollow body was used for storing tobacco, the fuse held in the left hand probably for lighting a pipe. The posture corresponds to the command "catch the grenade" prescribed by the drill regulations.
