John Gay's photograph records a visit to the tomb of Karl Marx by a Chinese delegation. The political philosopher and writer was originally buried in a more modest grave in Highgate's East Cemetery but his remains were moved to this site in 1954. The bronze bust was sculpted by Laurance Bradshaw in 1956.
