A gun at St. Mawes Castle

In Tudor times the castle guns were supported by more guns at the shoreline, firing from the blockhouse and from open platforms behind a parapet. By the early 18th century the castle was essentially a barracks and gunpowder store, and most of the guns were emplaced in what became known in the 19th century as the Grand Sea Battery.
