In the earliest days Kansas railroad tracks were frequently blocked by herds of bison. To combat the impact of the animals railways began advertising “hunt by rail” features. When a train came up to a herd passengers would take aim, killing as many bison as possible without actually leaving the train. Combined with other hunting practices, hunt by rail brought the bison near extinction.

After the U.S. Civil War railroads expanded rapidly in Kansas. Traveling through the state on train was one of the safest and fastest ways to cross the country. Over a hundred years later railroads still frequently roll across the plains. For more information please visit: https://www.kshs.org/kansapedia/railroads-in-kansas/15120
