In 1921, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”) initiated the Society for Safeguarding Health (TOZ), which went on to support the establishment of Jewish hospitals, child care institutions, and food distribution stations throughout the country in cooperation with local Jewish institutions. TOZ ran summer camps for children suffering from poor health due to inadequate living conditions and poor nutrition. These camps allowed them to experience a summer of fresh air, sunshine, food, and healthcare.
