Kozielsk prison camp was set up in the summer of 1940 in place of a previous special camp, from which about 4,400 prisoners – Polish officers – were murdered by the NKVD in Katyń in April 1940, on the orders of Stalin and the Political Office of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).

    Dear Mother and Father, I am healthy and staying at a camp. You might think that I am unwell but this is not true. I am just fine, so there’s no difference between my life and that of Moraś, we have all we need and we do not lack anything. Dear Father. Please, write to me about your health, the health of mummy, my brothers and sisters; how are you doing? I suppose that Zosia must be in a desperate position; surely with no roof over her head, put up in a dugout, like the others; living on the money she can get for her clothes – please, write something about her and give me her address – she is the only sister I really liked. The winter is quite severe here and we are expecting more
