A liquid lens with a viewing angle of 120 degrees was improvised by Dr. Vincent J. Schaefer, General Electric Research Laboratory weather scientist, to take pictures of one-third of the sky. Unable to acquire a glass lens with such a wife angle of coverage, Dr. Schaefer filled a flask with an oil with a high refractive index, then set up a camera behind the improvised lens.
