A temperature increase of less than 1°C for a few weeks may be sufficient to cause coral bleaching. This phenomenon results from the separation between the animal (the polyp) and the alga (zooxanthella) which provides food and energy through photosynthesis.
A bleached coral reef is the most visible impact on biodiversity of global warming.
