Born in Fontainebleau, Lefebvre studied under Le Brun and was to become one of the leading portrait painters in Paris in the third quarter of the seventeenth century.
The sitter, traditionally called Molière, is now identified as Michel Baron (1653–1729), an actor in Molière's company. However, he does not greatly resemble a portrait of Baron that is now in the Comédie Française, Paris.
