Explorer Matthew A. Henson was one of the first men to reach the North Pole. Robert E. Peary hired Henson on many expeditions, including the historic venture to the North Pole in 1909. Henson published A Negro Explorer at the North Pole in 1912 and was awarded the Congressional Medal for the Peary Expedition in 1944.
