In 1550, when new animals were constantly being discovered, the French author, Guy de la Garde, devoted this entire book to the phoenix. It is printed on vellum (calf-skin), and includes hand-painted illustrations. Phoenixes are historically associated with the Sun. The seven-feathered crest on the bird’s head corresponds to the seven rays which traditionally emit from the head of Helios, the Greek god of the Sun. Shown here: sigs. Ci recto
