FOR FIRST PUBLICATION WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16TH. THE PROGRESS OF A NEW TOWN JS 16.8.1950. HARLOW is one of eight New Towns designed for the reception of population and industry from the crowded areas of inner London, and which are expected to take about 250,000 Londoners. Harlow's contribution to this being an increase in population of 55,000. HARLOW recently reached a distinct stage in its development with the commencement of building work in the MARK HALL area - a step which marked the beginning of work on the New Town proper and the end of preparation which has lasted since the Master Plan. This Plan was the first to receive official approval despite the fact that the Corporation was by no means the first to be set up. Much work has also been done in the CHIPPINGFIELD area, where terraced and semi-detached houses have been created, and some of which are already in occupation by members of the Corporation's staff and employees of the contractors. This recent series of pictures gives some idea of the well-planned lay-out, and the types of houses in course of erection. Picture shows the lounge of a 3- bedroomed terraced type house at CHIPPINGFIELD. This house has a dining-kitchen and is let at an inclusive rent of 28/7d per week. Housing - Permanent - Harlow Estate
