GLOUCESTERSHIRE. PREPARING FOR SALMON SEASON. CR/4 Salmon fishers on the banks of the River Severn are now busily engaged in renovating and making new "putchers" (the odd shaped baskets employed in catching the fish) in readiness for the opening of the season. The putchers are fixed in rows on a framework in the stream, the salmon entering the open end and getting caught in the narrow end. Photo shows - Mrs. Cornock, the wife of the oldest salmon fisher on the Severn and probably the only woman basket maker in the industry making a putcher at Oldbury-on-Severn. Fox February 1st. 1935. GETTING READY for the Salmon season - Mrs Cornock making a "putcher" at Oldbury-on-Severn, centre of the Severn salmon fishing industry. "Putchers" are fixed in rows to a framework in the stream.
