TEN YEARS AT KENT REFINERY
ERF F2425
19.2.1963.
TEN YEARS AGO AN HISTORIC ENTRY WAS MADE IN THE LOG BOOK AT BP'S KENT REFINERY: "10 A.M. FEBRUARY 20TH, 1953, No.1. DISTILLATION UNIT ON STREAM."
SINCE THAT DATE OVER 60 MILLION TONS OF CRUDE OIL, OR AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT FIVE MILLION GALLONS EVERY DAY, HAVE BEEN PROCESSED THROUGH THE REFINERY, THE BIGGEST WHOLLY-OWNED REFINERY IN THE BP GROUP. IN 1963 IT IS EXPECTED TO HANDLE SOME TEN MILLION TONS OF CRUDE OIL AND NEW UNITS ARE STILL BEING BUILT. TODAY FROM KENT REFINERY THERE COMES A MULTITUDE OF OIL PRODUCTS, RANGING FROM LIQUID PETROLEUM GAS AND VARIOUS GRADES OF PETROL TO LUBRICATING OILS, FUEL OIL, SULPHUR AND PETROLEUM CHEMICALS.
DURING 1963 THE CRUDE OIL BROUGHT IN SUPER-TANKERS, MAINLY FROM THE MIDDLE EAST, TO KENT'S NINE JETTIES ON THE MEDWAY, WILL BE SOME FOUR TIMES THE AMOUNT HANDLED THROUGH THE REFINERY IN 1953. ANOTHER 1,000 OR MORE TANKERS OF ALL SIZES AND 1,000 BARGES WILL LOAD BP FINISHED PRODUCTS FOR DELIVERY IN THE
UNITED KINGDOM, EUROPE, AND MANY OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.
