FOR FIRST PUBLICATION FRIDAY'S DAILIES, October 6th. ENGLAND HAS EUROPE'S BIGGEST OIL REFINERY 5.10.1950. Overlooking Southampton Water at FAWLEY, an army of men is engaged in erecting what will be the biggest oil refinery in Europe, which when in full operation will contribute 25 per cent to the total refining output of this country - there will be fewer bigger plants anywhere in the world. This vast new enterprise of the Anglo-American Oil Company represents close co-operation between the two countries; it does not involve Marshall Aid, and will save millions of dollars annually. The project will cost approximately £37,000,000, and will employ 2,000 people, and is expected to turn out more than 5,000,000 tons of petroleum products per year. Britain's dependence upon the United States for petrol and other products of crude oil will be greatly eased. The picture shows floating roof crude oil storage tanks. On the left is the 800ft long maintenance building which contains one of the most up-to-date machine tool shops in the country. In background Southampton Water. Industry - Oil Refineries
