MAKING THE CORONATION CARPET ON THE LARGEST LOOMS IN SCOTLAND.
10.3.1937.
The carpet that is to be laid in Westminster Abbey for the Coronation ceremony is now being carefully made in a Glasgow Mill. The carpet has several special features. It is one of the biggest ever made, the pieces, of which there are many, are 40ft. x 35ft. and the surface is getting special treatment to make it as smooth as glass, this has been found necessary to allow the flowing trains of the royal ladies and peeresses wo
will walk on it, an easy passage, as any minute obstruction would catch in the frail material they will wear. The carpet, owing to its gigantic size, is being made on the largest looms in Scotland, of Messrs. TEMPLETON of Glasgow, who also made the Coronation carpet for George V when he was crowned in 1912. The Scots girls who are now working on the carpet, feel delighted to be sharing in the work for this historic ceremony and are taking extra special care at all stages of progress to produce the finest example of carpet making.
O.P.S. Some idea of the size of the pieces can be gathered from this row of girls working on the loom that is making the carpet.
