ROYAL MINT BUSY ON NEW ZEALAND DECIMAL COINS
JXN 17.1.1967
THE ROYAL MINT IN LONDON IS BUSY MINTING DECIMAL COINS FOR NEW ZEALAND.
ON JULY 10 1967, NEW ZEALAND WILL
CHANGE FROM ITS PRESENT POUNDS, SHILLINGS AND PENCE SYSTEM OF CURRENCY TO A DECIMAL SYSTEM IN WHICH THE NEW ZEALAND DOLLAR, VALUED AT 10 SHILLINGS N.Z. WILL BE THE MAIN UNIT. THE DOLLAR WILL BE DIVIDED INTO 100 CENTS, EACH WORTH 1.2 PENCE.
SIX COINS ARE BEING MINTED, THE ONE AND TWO CENT PIECES OF BRONZE, AND THE FIVE, TEN, TWENTY AND FIFTY CENT PIECES OF CUPRO-NICKEL. IN ADDITION ABOUT HALF A MILLION COMMEMORATIVE
DOLLAR COINS, ALSO OF CUPRO-NICKEL, ARE BEING STRUCK.
THE DESIGNS FOR THE REVERSE OF THE COINS WERE DECIDED BY THE GOVERNMENT AFTER A LONG PUBLIC CONTROVERSY OVER THE SELECTION FROM A WIDE VARIETY OF DESIGNS. ALL SIX OF THE MAIN COINS WERE DESIGNED BY A NEW ZEALAND ARTIST MR. JAMES BERRY OF WELLINGTON. DESIGN OF THE REVERSE OF THE COMMEMORATIVE DOLLAR WAS REPARED BY MR. WILLIAM GARDNER, A.R.C.A, F.S.I.A., OF WITTERSHAM, KENT. THE OBVERSE OF ALL SEVEN COINS CARRIES THE NEW EFFIGY OF THE QUEEN BY MR. ARNOLD MACHIN, R.A. OF LONDON, AND APPROVED BY HER MAJESTY IN 1964.
