CRAFT "IN CHARACTER" MJH/HT. When the famous Cathedral Weaving Centre of Canterbury recently took over an old building in Best Lane (Canterbury) as an extension to their teaching facilities, they did not know just how appropriate it was. However during alterations the casing round the main chimney of the building was removed and workmen discovered parts of centuries old looms and spinning wheels. This, combined with the strength of the first storey floors proved that it had once been a weaving establishment and it has been ascertained that this building is the place where the Huguenot and Walloon weavers of the Middle Ages carried on their art of weaving when they fled from the Continent, so the present-day weavers have the right atmosphere for their craft. PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS: In the old Huguenot Centre, which has been taken over by the Canterbury Weaving Centre, two young girls are seen working in the exact spot where the Huguenot and Wolloon weavers worked centuries ago. On the left MISS MARGARET WELLS of Faversham (Kent) is carding, whilst MISS DORIS BAILEY sits at the spinning wheel on the original platform beneath the eaves of the roof.
