At Stowe the fields of Buckinghamshire were re-landscaped as valleys, lakes, and vistas in a vision of “Arcadia” (the idealised world of classical myth). In the 18th century gardens were open to the public. Seeley’s publication is the earliest example of a garden guidebook.
