Because his girlfriend Li Guei-hsiang was a music student in Japan, Huang Ching-cheng also took an interest in music. At the time, Beethoven and Rodin were the European artists most influential in the Japanese art world. Their respective aesthetic philosophies and works inspired young Taiwanese studying in Japan as well. Huang Ching-cheng produced several sculptures of Beethoven. This work embodies the inspiration and understanding Huang derived from Rodin's sculptural innovations.
