Subhaschandra Bose, an alumnus of Presidency College (now Presidency University), was the most uncompromising opponent of the British Empire. He was expelled from Presidency for allegedly assaulting Professor Edward Farley Oaten for his anti-India comments. He completed his studies from Scottish Church College (University of Calcutta) and University of Cambridge, before joining the Independence movement under the leadership of Chittaranjan Das, another alumnus of Presidency College. His defiant patriotism turned him into an iconic figure among the masses. Twice he became the president of Indian National Congress. It was he who first conceived the National Planning Committee that later got transformed into the Planning Commission of free India. Bose dedicated his life to the struggle to liberate his countrymen from colonial rule. In pursuit of that goal he led the Indian National Army against Allied Forces during the Second World War.
