Raja Sur Singh was a significant and esteemed figure at Akbar's court. Upon his accession in 1595, Akbar granted him a mansab of two thousand men. He participated in military campaigns alongside Prince Murad and Prince Daniyal in the Deccan and Gujarat and received several commendations from Jahangir in his memoirs, Tuzuk-i Jahangiri.

During his lifetime, multiple portraits of Raja Sur Singh of Jodhpur (r. 1595–1619) were produced at the Mughal court atelier. One notable study by Bishandas, dating from the 1590s, is part of the Imperial Album of portraits, now known as the Kevorkian Album, housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
