Subodhchandra Mahalanobis (1867 – 1953), a graduate of Edinburgh and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, was a Professor of Botany at Presidency College (now Presidency University) from 1900 to 1914, and (on the separation of the Physiology and Botany Department) Professor of Physiology from 1914 to 1927. The physiology department of Presidency College owes its inception to him. He was also University Professor of Physiology for many years. After retiring from Presidency College, he taught at the Carmichael Medical College from 1927 to 1942. In his days he was one of the leading authorities in India on his subject. He was a Fellow of the Senate of University of Calcutta from 1904 to 1946, and a member of its Syndicate from 1906 to 1928.
