Handwritten score for voice, piano and chorus.
Proclaimed as Portugal's National Anthem in 1911, in the National Constituent Assembly, the march "A Portuguesa" was composed by Alfredo Keil following the 1890 British Ultimatum, considered a national humiliation all over the country.
With lyrics by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça, "A Portuguesa" was officially premiered with immediate success in february 13, 1890, during the breaks of events happening at Teatro D. Maria II and Teatro Alegria.
Museu Nacional da Música holds Alfredo Keil's musical archive, wich integrates several documents related to "A Portuguesa", especially printed and handwritten scores, of wich this one is an example.
