A resident of Brussels zoo

This African elephant is a senior resident of Brussels zoo, which was established in Leopold Park, below the Museum. On its death in 1880, the animal was stuffed and given to the Museum. Up until the renovation of the building, in the 1980s, it occupied exactly the same spot as it does today.
