A scene from a gathering at the Born café

The work evokes the intellectual and human meeting space of the cafes of the Borne in Palma, where Verdaguer participated in gatherings during the post-war period, especially in the Fígaro cafe, together with Llorenç Villalonga and other local writers and intellectuals. The three figures gathered around the table form a closed and centered composition, where the circular table acts as a nucleus of conviviality and cohesion. The faces, rendered with essential lines and without superfluous detail, express an inner state rather than specific individualities. The palette of earthy tones and muted blues contributes to creating a twilight light, typical of a café atmosphere evoked rather than literally depicted. The ink defines the contours quickly and fluidly, while the aquarel creates soft and transparent chromatic masses that visually unify the whole. Paper fi, a common support in this work, attenuates the pigments and generates a veiled atmosphere that reinforces the intimate character of the scene. The background is suggestive of single blocks and indefinite silhouettes, which hint at the traffic and the murmur of the premises without description. This spatial and formal simplification refers to a moderate expressionism, typical of Verdaguer's language: a style that combines the gest lliure, the synthesis of forms and a continuous narrative will.
