A set of ship's camels carrying the warship 'Neptune'

A model of a set of ship's camels carrying the full model of the warship 'Neptune'. The year 1803 can be read on the stern of the 'Neptune'. This is the year the ship model was manufactured, since the ship 'Neptunus' was built in 1798 at the Admiralty shipyard in Rotterdam. The model belongs to the collection of the Batavian Society in Rotterdam and was donated to them in 1806 by P. Glavimans.
Ship's camels were invented by Meeuwis Meindertsz. Bakker and built since 1690. They served to lift large, in-depth ships and thus bring them safely out of the sea over the shallows of the Zuiderzee, for example near Amsterdam (Pampus) and Medemblik. The bow is decorated with a skeg, representing Neptune. The stern is also decorated. Dimensions of the model are (lxwxh): 138 x 50 x 143 cm.
